The effect of ionizing radiation on potassium methyl and ethyl sulphates has been examined, using electron spin resonance to identify the trapped paramagnetic species. After γ-irradiation at 77°K the radicals ÄH2OSOâ3 and CH3ÄHOSOâ3 predominate in the methyl and ethyl compounds respectively, and some SOâ3 is seen. Above 200°K only SOâ3 remains; its identity was confirmed by an analysis of the 33S hyperfine interaction. Mechanisms for the radiolysis are discussed.
