    In search of a new design strategy for solid single-component organic ferroelectrics: Polar crystalline phases formed by bent-core molecules

    A novel biocatalytic protocol for CC bond formation is described and is an equivalent to Friedel–Crafts alkylation. S‐Adenosyl‐L‐methionine (SAM), the major methyl donor for biological methylation catalyzed by methyltransferases (Mtases), can perform alkylations (see scheme). These enzymes can accept non‐natural cofactors and transfer functionalities other than methyl onto aromatic substrates.

    A one‐pot, two‐enzyme C‐methylation process is described. Combining SAM production using SalL (Salinospora tropica) with the C‐methyltransferase NovO (Streptomyces spheroides) enables the synthesis of a suite of methylated and ethylated coumarin products, as demonstrated for labelled 13CH3, 13CD3 and CD3 groups from their corresponding SAM analogues.

  • The effect of a thiophene ring in the outer position on mesomorphic properties of the bent-shaped liquid crystals

    Novel bent-shaped compounds with the naphthalene central core possessing an outer thiophene unit in the lengthening arm were synthesized. Mesomorphic behaviour of new materials was studied using optical polarising microscopy, DSC, and electrooptic methods. The structures of mesophases were identified by X-ray diffraction and the structural parameters established. In the case of the thiophene unit in one molecular arm (the phenyl in the opposite arm) we succeeded in obtaining mesogenic properties for all types of lateral substitutions on the central naphthalene core. All non-substituted compounds and materials with the central core substituted by CH3 or Cl exhibited the B2 phase. The B7 phase has been observed for all compounds with CN-substituted central core. Materials with the thiophene unit in both lengthening arms were not liquid crystalline except for the CN-substituted compound exhibiting the B7 phase. Mesomorphic properties of compounds with the thiophene are compared with those detected on analogous materials with the phenyl ring.

    The invention provides: a composition for forming an organic film, the composition having high filterability and enabling formation of an organic film which has high pattern-curving resistance, and which prevents a high-aspect line pattern particularly finer than 40 nm from line collapse and twisting after dry etching; a method for forming an organic film and a patterning process which use the composition; and a substrate for manufacturing a semiconductor device, including the organic film formed on the substrate. The composition for forming an organic film includes a condensate (A), which is a condensation product of dihydroxynaphthalene shown by the following formula (1) and a condensation agent, or a derivative of the condensate (A). A sulfur content among constituent elements contained in the condensate (A) or the derivative of the condensate (A) is 100 ppm or less in terms of mass.
