  IN the course of experiments on the synthetic Å"strogens, it became evident that the substance, m.p. 140–142°, obtained by Dodds, Golberg, Lawson and Robinson1 from the liquid modification of 4:4′-dimethoxy - α:β-diethylstilbene, and hitherto considered to be an isomer of stilbÅ"strol (4:4′-dihydroxy - α:β-diethylstilbene)1,2, was probably a mixture.

  Walton and Brownlee1 have reported the conversion of pure ψ-diethylstilbœstrol (cis ?) into diethylstilbœstrol (trans) in 80 per cent yield by heating with alcoholic hydrochloric acid. Recent work in this laboratory has shown that heating with 2·5 N aqueous hydrochloric acid for periods of 30 min.−2 hr. converts both ψ-diethylstilbœstrol and diethylstilbœstrol into an equilibrium mixture in which,
