Abstract The infrared and Raman spectra of CCl 3 I have been recorded. Band assignments have been made on the basis of the infrared results, and the Raman spectrum has been interpreted in terms of the fundamentals of CCl 3 I, with additional bands being assigned to decomposition products of CCl 3 I. Trichloroidomethane reacts with a number of alkyls and aryls of Group VB elements forming 1:1 adducts, R3M.CCl3I. The compounds are unstable in the presence of moisture. Conductimetric titrations show that the compounds are not quaternary salts similar to the di-iodo derivatives of the organometallic compounds.
