It is based on a newly designed 1,4-naphthoquinone derivative that contains polar and nonpolar groups and self-assembles into micelles or vesicles in water depending on the concentration. The present invention provides for methods of screening agents for cytotoxic and/or anti-microbial activity. In particular embodiments, the loss of a fluorescent signal from the treated cells, due to cell death or inhibition of growth, is measured for several different cell types in parallel.
