A three-component condensation of formaldehyde, o-phenylenediamine, and ammonia gave a novel 1,5: 3,7-dimethano-1,3,5,7-benzotetrazonine. Its structure was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. An analogous condensation of formaldehyde, ammonia, and 1,2-diamino-4-methylbenzene yielded 9-methyl-1,5:3,7-dimethano-1,3,5,7-benzotetrazonine.
