Treatment of benzoic acid with triphenylphosphine and diisopropyl azodicarboxylate in THF or acetonitrile, results in the formation of benzoic anhydride. A significant solvent effect was observed for this reaction. Anhydride formation did not occur however with the more acidic p-nitrobenzoic acid.
