    A process for increasing the selectivity of an alkanolamine absorption process for selectively removing hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) from a gas mixture which also contains carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and possibly other acidic gases such as COS, HCN, CS 2 and sulfur derivatives of C 1 to C 4 hydrocarbons, comprises contacting the gas mixture with a liquid absorbent which is a severely sterically hindered capped alkanolamine. The improvement in selectivity is achieved at the high(er) pressures, typically least about 10 bara at conditions nearing the H 2 S/CO 2 equilibrium at which CO 2 begins to displace absorbed hydrosulfide species from the absorbent solution.

    A process for removal of acid gases from fluid stream, wherein the fluid stream is brought into contact with an absorbent to obtain a treated fluid stream and a laden absorbent, the absorbent comprising a diluent and a compound of the general formula (I) wherein R 1 is selected from C 1 -C 8 -alkyl and C 2 -C 8 -hydroxyalkyl; R 2 is selected from hydrogen and C 1 -C 8 -alkyl; R 3 is selected from hydrogen and C 1 -C 8 -alkyl; R 4 is selected from hydrogen and C 1 -C 8 -alkyl; R 5 is C 1 -C 8 -alkyl; with the proviso that at least one of the following conditions (i) and (ii) is met: (i) R 5 is C 3 -C 8 -alkyl bound to the nitrogen atom via a secondary or tertiary carbon atom; (ii) when R 4 is hydrogen, R 3 is C 1 -C 8 -alkyl; or when R 4 is C 1 -C 8 -alkyl, at least one of R 2 and R 3 is C 1 -C 8 -alkyl; and n is an integer from 0 to 6. Further provided is an absorbent for the absorption of acid gases from a fluid stream, comprising a diluent and a compound of the general formula (I) as defined above, as well as the use of a compound of the general formula (I) as defined above for removal of acid gases from a fluid stream. The absorbents are useful for the selective removal of hydrogen sulfide from fluid streams and have high acid gas loading capacity, high stability, and low volatility.

    A process for treating an H2S- and CO2-comprising fluid stream, in which a) the fluid stream is treated in a first absorber at a pressure of 10 to 150 bar with a first substream of a regenerated H2S-selective absorbent to obtain a treated fluid stream and an H2S-laden absorbent; b) the H2S-laden absorbent is heated by indirect heat exchange with regenerated H2S-selective absorbent; c) the heated H2S-laden absorbent is decompressed to a pressure of 1.2 to 10 bar in a low-pressure decompression vessel to obtain a first CO2-rich offgas and a partly regenerated absorbent; d) the partly regenerated absorbent is regenerated in a desorption column to obtain an H2S-rich offgas and regenerated absorbent; e) the H2S-rich offgas is fed to a Claus unit and the offgas from the Claus unit is fed to a hydrogenation unit to obtain hydrogenated Claus tail gas; f) the hydrogenated Claus tail gas and the first CO2-rich offgas are treated in a second absorber at a pressure of 1 to 4 bar with a second substream of the regenerated H2S-selective absorbent to obtain a second CO2-rich offgas and a second H2S-laden absorbent; and g) the second H2S-laden absorbent is guided into the first absorber. Also described is a plant suitable for performance of the process. The process is notable for a low energy requirement.
