  [EN] A process for preparing isocyanates by reacting olefins with isocyanuric acid in a solvent, the solvent being an ionic liquid. The ionic liquid is preferably selected from (A) salts of the general formula (I) in which n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, [A]⁺ is a quaternary ammonium cation, an oxonium cation, a sulfonium cation or a phosphonium cation, and [Y]^n- is a mono-, di-, tri- or tetravalent anion; (B) mixed salts of the general formulae (II) [A1]⁺[A²]⁺ [Y]^n- (IIa), where n = 2; [A¹]⁺ [A²]⁺[A³]⁺ [Y]^n- (IIb), where n = 3; [A¹]⁺ [A²]⁺[A³]⁺[A⁴]⁺ [Y]^n- (IIc), where n = 4 and where [A¹]⁺, [A²]⁺, [A³]⁺ and [A⁴]⁺ are each independently selected from the groups mentioned for [A]⁺ and [Y]^n- is as defined under (A).
