Die Methylierung sowie Äthylierung von 1,2- und von 2,1-Benzolazonaphtol wurde in konz. Natronlauge bei erhöhter Temperatur unter Anwendung von 2 Mol Dialkylsulfat auf 1 Mol Oxyazoverbindung erfolgreich durchgeführt. [Variante der Vorschriften von Ghigi sowie Charrier & Ferreri.] Die Alkylierung von 1,4-Benzolazonaphtol erfordert nur 1,5 Mol Alkylierungsmittel.

Coloring matters represented by general formula (1) or salts thereof are simply provided at a low cost as water-soluble coloring matters which exhibit absorption in the near-infrared region. Further, aqueous ink compositions which contain the coloring matters and have excellent storage stability are also provided.
