    Thermodynamics of Mixed Surfactant Solutions of N,N′-Bis(dimethyldodecyl)-1,2-ethanediammoniumdibromide with 1-Dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium Bromide

    Mixed surfactant solutions are studied to understand their synergistic effects. Here we report the micellization properties of mixed surfactant solutions of the gemini surfactant N,N'-bis(dimethyldodecyl)-1,2-ethanediammoniumdibromide (12-2-12) with the imidazolium ionic liquid 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C(12)mimBr) investigated by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), conductometry, fluorimetry, and dynamic light scattering (DLS). A two-parameter Margules model was successfully used to correlate the cmc values and calculate the compositions and activity coefficients of the two components in the mixed micelle phase for 12-2-12/C(12)mimBr aqueous solutions with different overall surfactant compositions. The dissociation degree of counterion, the thermodynamic quantities of micellization, and the excess thermodynamic quantities for the mixed micelle were calculated and discussed. The ITC experiment in the low overall surfactant composition region showed a second phase transition. A thermodynamic model was proposed to explore phase behaviors of two different types of micelle and their solution, which was further confirmed by fluorescence and DLS studies.

The antimicrobial composition can include a compound having the formula (I) wherein R is a methylene group unsubstituted or optionally substituted, s is an integer in the range from 1 to 6, R1, R2, R3 or R4 is H or a C 1-4 alkyl unsubstituted or optionally substituted, X is a halogen, m and n are integers in the range from 5 to 25, and m is not equal to n. Alternatively, the antimicrobial composition can comprise a compound having the formula (III) or (IV) wherein R1, R2, R3, R4 R5, or R6 is H or a C1-4 alkyl unsubstituted or optionally substituted, X or Y is a halogen, and m and n are integers in the range from 5 to 25.

    The present disclosure provides an antimicrobial composition including a polycationic amphiphile compound, and the method of making and the method of using such a compound or composition. The compound having the formula (I) or (II) R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , R 6 , R 10 , or R 11 is H or a C 1-12 alkyl unsubstituted or optionally substituted with a functional group such as —OH, —OR′, —NH 2 , —NHR′, —NR′ 2 , —N—C(0)R′, —N—C(0)CR′═CR′, —SH, —SR′, -0-C(0)R′, —C(0)R′, —CF 3 , —OCF 3 , halogen, benzyl, o-vinylbenzyl, m-vinylbenzyl, p-vinylbenzyl, phenyl, allyl, and substituted allyl. R 7 , R 8 or R 9 is a C 1-12 alkyl unsubstituted or optionally substituted with a functional group such as —OH, —OR′, —NH 2 , —NHR′, —NR′ 2 , —SH, —SR′, -0-C(0)R′, —C(0)R′, —CF 3 , and —OCF 3 . R′ is H or a C 1-4 alkyl. X or Y is a halogen, m and n are integers in the range from 1 to 25.
