    In a process for separating a mixture comprising cyclohexanone and phenol, at least a portion of the mixture is distilled in the presence of a solvent including at least two alcoholic hydroxyl groups attached to non-adjacent saturated carbon atoms and at least one hemiketal defined by the formula (I) or the formula (II): [Formula I], [Formula II] wherein R1, the same or different at each occurrence, is independently an alkylene group having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkylene group having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms, and R3 is hydrogen or the following group: [Formula III] and/or an enol-ether derived from the hemiketal defined by the formula (I) or the formula (II), wherein the total concentration of the hemiketal and the enol-ether, expressed in terms of weight percentage on the basis of the total weight of the feed to the distilling step (a), is at least 0.01%.

    Benzene is converted by reductive alkylation to cyclohexylbenzene; cyclohexylbenzene by oxidation and cleavage is converted into a mixture of cyclohexylbenzene, phenol and cyclohexanone; after removal of cyclohexylbenzene from this mixture, the remaining mixture consisting essentially of phenol and cyclohexanone is effectively separated into its components by extractive distillation with a sulfolane.

    In a process for producing phenol, cyclohexylbenzene hydroperoxide is cleaved to produce a cleavage effluent stream comprising phenol and cyclohexanone and at least a portion of the cleavage effluent stream is fractionated to produce a first fraction richer in cyclohexanone than the cleavage effluent stream portion and a second fraction richer in phenol and depleted in cyclohexanone as compared with said cleavage effluent stream portion. At least a portion of the second fraction is then contacted with a dehydrogenation catalyst in a dehydrogenation reaction zone under dehydrogenation conditions effective to convert at least a portion of the cyclohexanone in said second fraction portion into phenol and cyclohexanol.

    A process in which a mixture including phenol, cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol is fed to a point intermediate the top and bottom of a distillation column, an overhead stream comprising cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol is withdrawn from a point adjacent the top of the column and a bottoms stream comprising phenol is withdrawn from adjacent the bottom of the column. By feeding additional cyclohexanone to a point below where the mixture is fed, the cyclohexanone content of the bottoms is reduced. The process is useful in separating chemicals used in producing cyclohexanone from phenol for manufacturing caprolactam, a polyamide monomer, or for other purposes.
