    3-(3'-Triethoxysilylpropyl)pentane-2,4-dione, (EtO)(3)SiCH2CH2CH2C[-C(O)CH3](2) (I), was synthesized from 3-allylpentane-2,4-dione, CH2 = CH-CH2-C(O)CH3](2), and trietboxysilane, (EtO)(3)SiH, in the presence of Speier's catalyst. The silylation occurred mainly at the terminal C atom of the allyl group. The corresponding europium(III), terbium(III), and ytterbium(III) beta-diketonates were synthesized from compound I and appropriate metal isopropoxides and used to obtain transparent sol-gel films containing Eu3+, Tb3+, and Yb3+ cations. The film formation was studied by IR spectroscopy. It was found that moisture causes not only the hydrolysis and condensation of triethoxysilyl groups but also the hydration of the cation of the rare-earth metal. When the terbium complex was excited at the wavelength of one of the two peaks (230 and 308 nm) in the excitation spectrum, the cation fluoresced intensely at 491, 547, 585, and 623 nm due to the transitions D-5(4) --> F-7(6), D-5(4) --> F-7(5), D-5(4) --> F-7(4), and D-5(4) --> F-7(3), respectively. All these bands were narrow, the band at 547 nm being most intense. No emission from the organosilicon matrix at 440 nm was observed. The emission spectra of Eu3+-containing films showed, along with the bands at 593, 618, 667, and 700 nm due to the emission from the cation (D-5(0) --> F-7(1), D-5(0) --> F-7(2), D-5(0) --> F-7(3), and D-5(0) --> F-7(4) transitions, respectively), an intense band at 491 nm due to the emission from the matrix.

    Novel Sol–Gel Precursors for Thin Mesoporous Eu3+-Doped Silica Coatings as Efficient Luminescent Materials.

    Europium(III) ions containing mesoporous silica coatings have been prepared via a solvent evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) approach of different single-source precursors (SSPs) in the presence of Pluronic P123 as a structure-directing agent, using the spin-coating process. A deliberate tailoring of the chemical composition of the porous coatings with various Si:Eu ratios was achieved by processing mixtures of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and Eu3+-coordinated SSPs. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses demonstrate that the thin metal oxide-doped silica coatings consist of a porous network with a short-range order of the pore structure, even at high europium(III) loadings. Furthermore, luminescence properties were investigated at different temperatures and different degrees of Eu3+ contents. The photoluminescence spectra clearly show characteristic emission peaks corresponding to the D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0-5) transitions resulting in a red luminescence visible by the eyes, although the films have a very low thickness (150-200 nm).

    A series of homogeneous R-C(COCH3)2Rh(CO)2 complexes (where R=H, n-C3H7, (CH3)3Si(CH2)3 and (C2H5O)3Si(CH2)3) was prepared. The immobilized analogues were synthesized using (C2H5O)3Si(CH2)3CH(COCH3)2 in the following ways: (i) by reaction of the complex (C2H5O)3Si(CH2)3C(COCH3)2Rh(CO)2 with untreated silica; (ii) by reaction of Rh2(CO)4Cl2 With silica functionalized by (C2H5O)3Si(CH2)3CH(COCH3)2; (iii) by treatment of Rh2(CO)4Cl2 with a polycondensate prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of (C2H5O)3Si(CH2)3CH(COCH3)2 and tetraethoxysilane; (iv) by sol-gel processing of (C2H5O)3Si(CH2)3C(COCH3)2Rh(CO)2 and tetraethoxysilane. The homogeneous complexes and their immobilized analogues are efficient catalysts for hydrogenation and hydrosilylation of alkenes. Their activities are discussed in relation to their structures and method of preparation.
