    The present invention relates to compounds of the formula (I), which are suitable as monomers for preparing thermoplastic resins having beneficial optical properties and which can be used for producing optical devices. In Formula (I), A1, A2 are selected from mono- or bicyclic aromatic radicals and mono- or bicyclic heteroaromatic radicals; X represents e.g. a single bond, O, NH, CR6R7; Y is e.g. absent or represents a single bond, O, NH, CR8R9; R1, R2 are hydrogen, a radical Ar' or a radical Ra; R3 is Alk, O-Alk'-, O-Alk'-[O-Alk']o, O-CH2-Ar-C(O)-, O-C(O)-Ar-C(O)-or O-Alk-C(O)-,where in the last five moieties the left O is bound to A1 and A2, respectively; m, n are 0, 1 or 2; o is an integer from 1 to 10; R4, R5 are e.g. selected from CN and a radical Ra; R6, R8 are e.g. selected from hydrogen, a radical Ar' and a radical Ra; R7, R9 are e.g. selected from hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl and a radical Ar'; Ra is selected from the group consisting of C≡C-R11 and Ar-C≡C-R11; R11 is e.g. selected from hydrogen, methyl, mono- or polycyclic aryl having from 6 to 26 carbon atoms and mono- or polycyclic hetaryl having a total of 5 to 26 atoms, which are ring members, where 1, 2, 3 or 4 of the ring atoms of hetaryl are selected from nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen, while the remainder of these atoms are carbon atoms, where mono- or polycyclic aryl are unsubstituted or substituted; and Ar is e.g. phenylene or naphthylene. The invention also relates to thermoplastic resins comprising a polymerized unit of the compound of formula (I) and to optical devices made of such resins.

    An optical article capable of modulating the reflection of polarized monochromatic electromagnetic radiation is disclosed comprised of a reflective metal layer, means acting as a support for directing the electromagnetic radiation to the reflective metal layer, an electrooptic medium that exhibits a refractive index which is a function of an applied electrical potential, and a counter electrode. At least one of the reflective metal layer and the counter electrode taking the form of laterally spaced segments. The reflective metal layer has a thickness of less than 0.5 µm, and a dielectric layer having a thickness in the range of from 0.1 to 10 times the wavelength of the electromagnetic radiation and comprised of at least one metal oxide, metal fluoride, or low molecular weight aromatic compound is coated on the support. The electrooptic medium is a polymeric layer coated on the reflective metal layer exhibiting a second order polarization susceptibility greater than 10⁻⁹ electrostatic units and comprised of polar aligned molecular dipoles having an electron donor moiety linked through a conjugated π bonding system to an electron acceptor moiety. The polymeric layer exhibits a refractive index which differs from that of the dielectric layer by less than 20 percent in the absence of an applied electrical potential.

    A photosensitive resin composition that excels in sensitivity to actinic energy rays (photosensitivity), is hardenable within a short period of time and can form pattern through development with a diluted aqueous alkali solution and that gives a cured film through thermal curing in the postcuring step, the cured film having satisfactory flexibility and being suitable to a solder mask ink of high insulation excelling in adherence and resistances of gold plating, electroless gold plating and tin plating; and a curing product thereof. In particular, a photosensitive resin composition characterized by comprising (1) a urethane resin (A) soluble in aqueous alkali solutions, the urethane resin obtained by urethanizing in the absence of catalyst a diisocyanate compound (a), a diol compound having an ethylenically unsaturated group in its molecule (b) and a diol compound having a carboxyl group in its molecule (c) optionally together with a diol compound not having any ethylenically unsaturated group or carboxyl group in its molecule (d) and reacting the reaction product with a cyclic acid anhydride (e); (2) photopolymerization initiator (B); and (3) a reactive crosslinking agent (C).

The photosensitive resin composition includes the alkali-soluble resin (A), a compound (B) containing an ethylenically unsaturated group, a photoinitiator (C) and an organic solvent (D). The photosensitive resin composition according to the present invention can improve the change rate of film thickness in thermal solvent and linearity of pattern with high finesse of the color filter.
