  The syntheses of 1,4,6-trimethylanthracene and 1,4,6-trimethylfluorene are described. N.m.r. spectroscopy has only limited use for locating the substituents in methylfluorenes. since the 1-, 2-, and 3-methyl protons have similar chemical shifts; the signal due to a 4-methyl substituent is at lower field.
