A series of 12- and 18-membered macrocycloethynes and macrocyclosilethenesilethynes, containing peripheral methyl and phenyl groups was prepared by organomagnesium sysnthesis under conditions of high dilution. One of these compounds contains an endocyclic 1,4-phenylene bridge.

The synthesis of new bis(trimethoxysilyl) and bis(dimethoxymethylsilyl)arene compounds containing rigid organic groups such as stilbenyl, diphenylacetylene or diphenylbut-1,3-diyne is reported. The Heck type reaction constituted a convenient route to these compounds. since this coupling reaction appeared compatible with the presence of Si(OR)(3) groups. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Self-organization of a rigid α,ω-bis-silanediol determined by X-ray crystal structure
