    Evidence for the reactivity of fatty aldehydes released from oxidized plasmalogens with phosphatidylethanolamine to form Schiff base adducts in rat brain homogenates

    The vinyl ether bond of plasmalogens could be among the first target of free radicals attack. Consequently, because of their location in the membranes of cells, plasmalogens represent a first shield against oxidative damages by protecting other macromolecules and are often considered as antioxidant molecules. However, under oxidative conditions their disruption leads to the release of fatty aldehydes. In this paper, we showed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses that fatty aldehydes released from plasmalogens after oxidation (UV irradiation and Fe2+ /ascorbate) of cerebral cortex homogenates can generate covalent modifications of endogenous macromolecules such as phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), like the very reactive and toxic malondialdehyde (NIDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE). These newly formed Schiff base adducts could be responsible for deleterious effects on cells thus making the protective role of plasmalogens potentially questionable. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.     Provided are non-crosslinked foamed polyethylene resin particles that have a bulk density BD of 10 g/L or more and 100 g/L or less and are obtained by foaming polyethylene resin particles containing an antistatic agent in an amount of 0.1 part by weight or more and 3 parts by weight or less with respect to 100 parts by weight of a polyethylene resin and having a density of 0.920 g/cm3 or more and less than 0.940 g/cm3, and the non-crosslinked foamed polyethylene resin particles have a shrinkage ratio of 3% or more and 30% or less determined in accordance with Formula (1). The non-crosslinked foamed polyethylene resin particles can simply afford an antistatic molded non-crosslinked foamed polyethylene resin body that has a small shrinkage ratio with respect to mold dimension, is deformed in a small degree, and has good surface stretch. Shrinkage ratio = (BD-VBD) x 100/VBD (1) In the formula, BD is a bulk density of the non-crosslinked foamed polyethylene resin particles at 23°C and 0.1 MPa (under standard atmospheric pressure), and VBD is a bulk density of the non-crosslinked foamed polyethylene resin particles at 23°C under a reduced pressure of 0.002 MPa or less.

    Disclosed is a lubricating oil composition for low-friction sliding materials, which is used in a sliding mechanism where a DLC film containing hydrogen in an amount of from 5 atom% to 50 atom% is formed on at least one sliding surface. The lubricating oil composition contains, in the lubricant base oil therein and based on the total amount of the composition, (A) an organic zinc dithiophosphate in an amount of from 0.005% by mass to 0.12% by mass in terms of the phosphorus concentration therein, (B) an amine-based friction-reducing agent in an amount of from 0.05% by mass to 5.0% by mass, and (C) an alkaline earth metal salicylate-based detergent and/or an alkaline earth metal sulfonate-based detergent in an amount of from 0.05% by mass to 0.5% by mass in terms of the alkaline earth metal concentration therein, wherein the component (A) contains, based on the total amount of the composition, a zinc primary dialkyldithiophosphate in an amount of from 0.005% by mass to 0.05% by mass in terms of the phosphorus concentration therein.

    Provided is a lubricating oil composition favorable for reducing friction in a sliding mechanism equipped with a piston ring and a liner, in a device having the sliding mechanism. The lubricating oil composition contains a lubricant base oil, (1) a polymethacrylate and/or an olefin copolymer having a mass-average molecular weight of 100,000 to 600,000, and (2) an ester-type ashless friction modifier and/or an amine-type ashless friction modifier, and has a shear viscosity at 150°C of 2.3 mPa· or more and less than 3.7 mPa·s.
