  The present invention relates to the use of 3,3′-dimethoxy-4,4′-dihydroxystilbene as an odorous substance, in particular for developing a vanilla odor under the action of light. Furthermore, the invention relates to a composition which contain 3,3′-dimethoxy-4,4′-dihydroxystilbene and additionally a carrier, fragrance compositions and/or an odorant material which contain said compound and a process for imparting or modifying an odor of compositions by adding said compound to these compositions.   Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft die Verwendung von 3,3'-Dimethoxy-4,4'-dihydroxystilben als Geruchsstoff, insbesondere zur Entfaltung eines Vannilin-Geruchs unter Lichteinwirkung. Des Weiteren betrifft die Erfindung eine Zusammensetzungen die 3,3'-Dimethoxy-4,4'-dihydroxystilben und zusätzlich ein Trägermaterial enthalten, Duftstoffzusammensetzungen und/oder ein Riechstoffmaterial, die die genannte Verbindung enthalten sowie ein Verfahren zum Verleihen oder Verändern eines Geruchs von Zusammensetzungen durch die Zugabe der genannten Verbindung zu diesen Zusammensetzungen. Zusätzlich betrifft die Erfindung ein Verfahren zur Gewinnung von 3,3'-Dimethoxy-4,4'-dihydroxystilben aus ligninhaltigen Zusammensetzungen.
