    Two-Step Synthesis of VO2 (M) with Tuned Crystallinity

    Highly crystallized monoclinic vanadium dioxide, VO2 (M), is successfully synthesized by a two-step thermal treatment: thermolysis of vanadyl ethylene glycolate (VEG) and postannealing of the poorly crystallized VO2 powder. In the first thermolysis step, the decomposition of VEG at 300 degrees C is investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A poorly crystallized VO2 powder is obtained at a strict time of 3 min, and it is found that the residual carbon content in the powder played a critical role in the post crystallization of VO2 (M). After postannealing at 500 and 700 degrees C in an oxygen-free atmosphere, VO2 particles of various morphologies, of which the crystallite size increases with increasing temperature, are observed by SEM and transmission electron microscopy. The weight percent of crystalline VO2, calculated using the Fullprof program, increases from 44% to 79% and 100% after postannealing. The improved crystallinity leads to an improvement in metal-insulator transition behaviors demonstrated by sharper and more intense differential scanning calorimetry peaks. Moreover, V2O3 and V2O5 with novel and particular microstructures are also successfully prepared with a similar two-step method using postannealing treatment under reductive or oxidizing atmospheres, respectively.

  • A cost-effective method to fabricate VO2 (M) nanoparticles and films with excellent thermochromic properties

    In this paper, high crystallinity and pure phase VO2 (M) powder is synthesized by a novel and facile method. Aiding by additional manual grinding and etching process, 22 nm high-quality VO2 (M) nanoparticles can be obtained. The structure and properties of the VO2 (M) particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometer. After mixing VO2 (M) nanoparticles with transparent polymer, thin films prepared by grinded VO2 nanoparticles show excellent thermochromic properties. The solar modulation ability is up to 12.4% with luminous transmittance of 62.7%. Moreover, The haze of films prepared by grinded VO2 (M) nanoparticles is down to 1.9%, which is far less than that of films prepared by original VO2 (Haze = 8.5%) and etched VO2 particles (Haze = 4.6%). Dramatical improvement of thermochromic property and definition indicate that it is a promising method to prepare large-scale VO2 nanoparticles and cost-effective smart window. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.     VO2(A) micro-nanostructures have been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method by hydrolysis of oxidovandium(2+) ethylene glycolate in malonic acid solution. The novel morphologies of VO2(A) could be readily tuned by altering the concentrations of malonic acid and reaction temperature. It is revealed that malonic acid played an important role as a structure directing agent helping the alternative formation of VO2(A). Furthermore, their electrochemical properties were investigated, which reveal that the as-prepared VO2(A) nanorods exhibit a relatively higher first discharge capacity than other VO2(A) morphologies.
