  (EN) A process for the modification of a polyphenylene ether resin composition is claimed, said process being carried out in a temperature range of between the melting point and the degradation point of said resin composition and in the presence of an effective amount of a citraconimide compound to reduce the melt viscosity of said resin composition, said citraconimide compound being represented by formula (I), wherein X is selected from the group consistin of hydrogen, C1-C18 alkyl groups, C2-C18 alkenyl groups, C2-C18 alkynyl groups, C3-C18 cycloalkyl groups, C3-C18 cycloalkenyl groups, C3-C18 cycloalkynyl groups, C6-C18 aryl groups, C7-C30 aralkyl groups, C7-C30 alkaryl groups, and C7-C30 alkenaryl groups, all of which may be linear or branched and unsubstituted or substituted with one or more amino, carboxy, cyano, halogens, esters, oxiranes, ethers, nitro, hydroxy and alkoxy groups. The melt viscosity of the resin compositions is significantly reduced by the process of the present invention. Furthermore, functional groups are introduced in the resin compositions by modification with a functional group-containing citraconimide compound.(FR) Procédé de modification d'une composition de résine d'éther de polyphénylène, ce procédé étant effectué dans le domaine de températures compris entre le point de fusion et la température de décomposition de ladite composition de résine, et en présence d'une quantité suffisante d'un composé de citraconimide pour réduire la viscosité en fusion de ladite composition de résine. Ledit composé de citraconimide répond à la formule (I), dans laquelle X est sélectionné dans le groupe constitué d'hydrogène, de groupes alkyles C1-18, de groupes alcényles C2-18, de groupes alcynyles C2-18, de groupes cycloalkyles C3-18, de groupes cycloalcényles C3-18, de groupes cycloalcynyles C3-18, de groupes aryles C6-18, de groupes aralkyles C7-30, de groupes alcaryles C7-30, et de groupes alcénaryles C7-30, tous ceux-ci pouvant être linéaires ou ramifiés et substitués ou non par un ou plusieurs groupes amino, carboxy, cyano, halogènes, esters, oxyranes, éthers, nitro, hydroxy et alcoxy. La viscosité en fusion des compositions de résine est sensiblement réduite par ce procédé. En outre, on introduit des groupes fonctionnels dans les compositions de résine par une mofidication à l'aide d'un composé de citraconimide contenant des groupes fonctionnels.
