  Novel ring-brominated derivatives of tetraalkyl dihydroxy diaromatic compounds, e.g. 4,4'­-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis(3,5-dibromo-2,6-dimethyl-phenol) are prepared by contacting a tetraalkyl dihydroxy­diaromatic compounds with a brominating agent in the presence of a reaction medium. Novel ring-brominated derivatives of the diepoxides of tetraalkyl dihydroxydiaromatic compounds, e.g., the diglycidyl ether of 3,5-di­bromo-4-(2-(2-bromo-4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethylphenyl)-­ethyl)-2,6-dimethylphenol are also prepared by contacting the aforementioned ring-brominated derivatives of tetraalkyl dihydroxydiaromatic compounds with haloalkylene oxide under reaction conditions.
