    Specific heat of the antiferro/ferro-magnet NpGa3

    The specific heat of NpGa3 has been measured for the first time. The magnetic transitions and more generally the full magnetic phase diagram have been re-established precisely. The Sommerfeld coefficient and the magnetic entropy point to a rather localized system, in agreement with previous studies, in particular high pressure Mossbauer and resistivity. The comparison with other NpX3 suggests that NpGa3 is the most localized member of the series. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    We report on the magnetic and electronic properties of NpSi3, NpGa3, and NpIn3, which crystallize in the cubic AuCu3 crystallographic structure (space group Pm 3m). Studies by Mossbauer as well as ac and dc magnetization techniques are presented. From the Mossbauer isomer-shift data we argue that the Np ion in NpX3 is close to the formal 3 + (I-5(4)) charge state. The magnetic moment of the Np in NPSi3 is totally suppressed, whereas in NpGa3 a localized (narrow band) moment (1.5-mu(B)) is established. However, in NpIn3 at 4 K, a modulated magnetic moment [(0-1.5)mu(B)] is observed. Comparing the magnetic behavior of the NpX3 family (X = Si, Al, Ga, Ge, Sn, and In), we find an impressive variation of the magnetic properties, from temperature-independent paramagnetism, localized and modulated ordered moments, to the formation of a concentrated Kondo lattice. Hybridization of 5f electrons with ligand electrons appears to play a crucial role in establishing these magnetic properties. However, a consistent theoretical picture cannot be drawn at present.

    The cubic (AuCu3-type) NpGa3 compound shown previously to order AF at T-N approximate to 65 K and to undergo a first-order transition to a ferromagnetic state at T-C approximate to 50 K, was investigated by single-crystal neutron diffraction and in-field Mossbauer measurements. The new data confirm the earlier conclusions and provide new information on the magnetic behaviour of NpGa3. The wave vector in the AF phase is k = (1/2 1/2 1/2). The magnetic structure (type II) consists of a simple arrangement of alternating + - + - sheets of ferromagnetic (1 1 1) planes. It is found that the Np moments point along the [1 1 1] direction in the ferromagnetic slate, while it is suggested that they should be along the [1 0 0] direction in the AF phase.

    Polycrystalline samples of NpG3 having the cubic AuCu3-type structure have been examined by magnetization, resistivity and Np-237 Mossbauer measurements. They show that the antiferromagnetic ordering occurring at about 65 K is replaced through a first-order transition by a ferromagnetic one at 50 K. The saturation Np moment inferred from the hyperfine field data amounts to 1.56mu(B). The analysis of the isomer shift data for the NpX3 Series allows us to conclude the occurrence of Np3+ ions and partial 5f delocalization in NpGa3. The value of the Np ordered moment and of the effective paramagnetic moment can be accounted for by assuming a GAMMA5 crystal field ground state.

    NpX3 (AuCu3-type structure) compounds with X=Al, Ga, Ge, In and Sn were studied up to 50 GPa using the energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXRD) technique. No structural phase transitions were observed for any of the compounds studied up to the highest pressures attained. The compressibility was measured for each compound and compared with theory.
