  Readily available 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl chloride smoothly reacts with various silyl enol ethers and silver(I) trifluoromethanesulphonate (triflate) to afford D-C-glucopyranosyl derivatives of α-configuration in high yields, whereas reaction with an electron-rich aromatic nucleophile yields the corresponding β-anomer.

  Reaction of the title compound (2) with lead thiocyanate gave phenylthio(trimethylsilyl)methyl isothiocyanate (3a) which further reacted with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of fluoride ion to afford oxazoles in good yields. Compound (2) also reacted with silyl enol ethers to give β-silyl ketones which were capable of being converted into β-functionalized vinylsilanes.

  The title compounds behaved as α-bromoglycine templates. Radical substitutions and SN1-type nucleophilic additions proceeded with retention of stereochemistry, while SN2-type displacements occurred with net inversion of configuration. A homocoupling product was obtained in attempting a Stille cross-coupling reaction.
