Synthesis, characterization, and photoluminescent properties of the Eu(ppa)(3).2H(2)O and Eu(ppa)(3).phen (ppa = 3-phenyl-2,4-pentanedione and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) solid complexes are reported. The characterization was carried out by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric, and elementary analyses (C, H, N). The photophysical data of Eu(ppa)(3).phen reveal a highly luminescent material where the characteristic Eu3+ transitions are observed in the emission spectrum (lambda(exe) = 350 nm). Based on the luminescence spectra of the Eu(III) compounds, the Omega(lambda) experimental intensity parameters (lambda = 2 and 4) were calculated for the electronic transitions D-5(0) --> F-7(2.4). The Omega(2) of Eu(ppa)(3).phen is higher than for the Eu(ppa)(3).2H(2)O complex. The mono exponential decay curves reveal only one type of site for the Eu3+ in both complexes. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.
