The reaction of ketene alkyl silyl acetals with acrylonitrile in the presence of titaniumtetrachloride in dichloromethane at -80°C leads to coupled compounds. Formation of these products can be explained by the transformation of ketene acetals into enoxy radicals trapping of these radicals by acrylonitrile and then dimerization. The reaction of silylketene acetals with acryloyl, methacryloyl and crotonyl chlorides gave, after addition of methanol, mainly substituted glutaric esters, probably via a (2 + 2) cycloaddition.

The reaction of silylketene acetals with 3,3-dimethylacryloyl chloride in acetonitrile gave <,δ-ethylenic β-keto esters 3. Application to a new synthesis of (∓)-turmerone is described.
