A liquid crystal composition, comprising: at least one mesomorphic compound represented by the following formula (I):
R¹-X¹-A¹-B-A²-X²-R² (I),
wherein R¹ and R² independently denote a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 - 18 carbon atoms capable of including one or non-neighboring two or more methylene groups which can be replaced with at least one species of -O-, -CO-, -COO-, -OCO-, -OCOO- or -CH(X)- with the proviso that -O- cannot directly be connected to -O- and X denotes halogen; X¹ and X² independently denotes a single bond, -O-, -COO-, -OCO- or -CO-; B denotes
A¹ denotes a single bond,
A² denotes a single bond, -A³- or -A³-A⁴- wherein A³ and A⁴ independently denote any one of A¹,
and Y¹ and Y² independently denote any one of hydrogen, F, Cl, Br, -CH₃, -CN and -CF₃; and at least one mesomorphic compound represented by the following formula (II):
wherein R³ and R⁴ independently denote a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 - 18 carbon atoms capable of including one or non-neighboring two or more methylene groups which can be replaced with at least one species of -O-, -CO-, -COO-, -OCO-, -OCOO- or -CH(X)- with the proviso that -O- cannot directly be connected to -O- and X denotes halogen; X³ and X⁴ independently denotes a single bond, -O-, -COO-, -OCO- or -CO-; Z¹ denotes a single bond, -COO- or -OCO-; A⁵, A⁶ and A⁷ independently denote a single bond,
Y³ and Y⁴ independently denote hydrogen, halogen, -CH₃ or -CF₃; and k is 0 or 1 with the proviso that X³ is a single bond when A⁵ is a single bond, and X⁴ is a single bond when A⁶ is a single bond and k is 0. The liquid crystal composition is easily aligned by a simple rubbing method to provide a uniform monodomain and further provides wider driving voltage and temperature margins effective for providing a practical ferroelectric liquid crystal device.
