The novel compound 1,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)diarsine, (F3C)As·As(H)(CF3), and the corresponding diphosphine can be prepared by reduction of F3CEI2(E = As or P) by mercury and a deficiency of HI; the methyl derivatives, (F3C)(Me)E·E(Me)(CF3) have also been prepared.

Iodo(trifluoromethyl)phosphine, F3CP(H)I, can be prepared by the reaction of iodine with F3CPH2, or by exchange between F3CPH2 and F3CPl2 with which it is in equilibrium. Chlorine reacts with F3CPH2 to give F3CP(H)Cl, (F3CPH)2, and HCl. with mercury and hydrogen iodide the product is (CF3)2PSH, formed by an anti-Arbuzov rearrangement. Bis(trifluoromethyl)dithiophosphinic acid, (CF3)2P(S)SH, is formed by heating sulfur with either (CF3)2PH or (CF3)2PSH. Addition of sulfur to CF3PFNMe2 and PF2NMe2 also gives the corresponding sulfides. The nmr and mass spectra of the new compounds are discussed. (Author)

Difluorophosphines, RPF2, containing the electronegative substituents, R = CF3 and C6H5, will undergo redox disproportionation with formation of tetrafluorophosphoranes and cyclopolyphosphines, in accord with the overall equation 10 RPF2→ 5 RPF4+(RP)n(n= 4, 5 for R = CF3; n= 5 for R = C6H5). The compounds CF3MH2 and (CF3)2MH (M = P or As) can be prepared in high yield by the reduction of the corresponding iodides with hydrogen iodide and mercury. Under the same conditions the diphosphine and diarsine, (CF3)2M·M(CF3)2, can be reduced to (CF3)2MH, and the cyclic tetramer and pentamer, (CF3M)4,5 to CF3MH2.
