    The present invention provides novel ketopyrroles having structure XXIV wherein R 2 is independently at each occurrence a deuterium atom, a halogen, a nitro group, an amino group, a C 3 -C 40 aromatic radical, a C 1 -C 50 aliphatic radical, or a C 3 -C 40 cyclcoaliphatic radical; “a” is an integer from 0 to 3; and X 1 and X 2 are independently at each occurrence a bromine atom, a hydroxy group, or the group OR 10 , and wherein the group R 10 is independently at each occurrence a deuterium atom, a halogen, a nitro group, an amino group, a C 3 -C 40 aromatic radical, a C 1 -C 50 aliphatic radical, or a C 3 -C 40 cyclcoaliphatic radical. Ketopyrroles XXIV are useful ligands for the preparation of Type (1) and Type (2) organic iridium compositions. In one aspect, the present invention provides deuterated analogs of XXIV. Organic iridium compositions are useful in the preparation optoelectronic devices, such as OLED devices and photovoltaic devices exhibiting enhanced performance characteristics.

    A method for purifying an oxydiphthalic anhydride comprises diluting a first mixture comprising an oxydiphthalic anhydride, a solvent, a catalyst, and an inorganic salt with a solvent, to provide a second mixture having a solids content of 10 to 30 percent based on total weight of the second mixture; filtering and washing the solids of the second mixture at a temperature below the crystallization point temperature of the oxydiphthalic anhydride to provide a third mixture; hydrolyzing the third mixture by adding water and a water-soluble acid to form a fourth mixture; heating the fourth mixture; then cooling to provide a solid-liquid mixture, optionally decanting a portion of the liquid, re diluting the remaining solid-liquid mixture, then filtering to provide a solid component; washing the solid component with water to provide a fifth mixture of oxydiphthalic tetra acid and water; ring closing the oxydiphthalic tetra acid to provide oxydiphthalic anhydride, and filtering the oxydiphthalic anhydride.

    A method for producing an aromatic bisimide includes reacting a dialkali metal salt of a dihydroxy aromatic compound with an N-alkyl nitrophthalimide to form a product mixture including the aromatic bisimide. The N-alkyl nitrophthalimide includes 4-nitro-N-(C1-13 alkyl)phthalimide, 3-nitro-N-(C1-13 alkyl)phthalimide, or a combination including at least one of the foregoing, and 4-hydroxy-3,5-dinitro-N-(C1-13 alkyl)phthalimide in an amount of 1-10000 ppm. The aromatic bisimide can be obtained in a yield of greater than 75%, or 90-99.8%. A method for the manufacture of a polyetherimide, a polyetherimide, and an article including the polyetherimide are also disclosed. A mixed acid nitration process for the preparation of an N-alkyl nitrophthalimide is also described.
