    Macroscopic Observations of Molecular Recognition: Discrimination of the Substituted Position on the Naphthyl Group by Polyacrylamide Gel Modified with β-Cyclodextrin

    Macroscopic molecular recognition observations were realized using polyacrylamide-based gels modified with alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD), beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD), 1-naphthylmethyl (1Np), and 2-naphthylmethyl (2Np) moieties, which are denoted as alpha CD(x)-gel, beta CD(x)-gel, 1Np(y)-gel, and 2Np(y)-gel, where x and y indicate the mol % of CD and Np moieties, respectively. The alpha CD(5)-gel did not adhere to either the 1Np(5)-gel or 2Np(5)-gel, whereas the beta CD (5)-gel interacted with both to form alternating or checkered assemblies. Although the difference in the association constants of beta-CD for the model polymers was small, the beta CD(x)-gel successfully discriminated between 1Np(y)-gel and 2Np(y)-gel at the appropriate x and y.

    The present invention provides a gel formed by a host-guest interaction and having self-healing and shape-memory properties, and a process for producing the gel. A monomer containing a host group, a monomer containing a guest group, and an acrylic type monomer were dissolved in an aqueous solvent, and these monomers were subsequently copolymerized to produce a gel obtained from these monomers.

    Water soluble fluors useful in enhancing images obtained in autoradiography have the general formula: F is a moiety which acts as a fluor, e.g., a dehydro derivative of a compound which is a fluor; preferred examples include 4-(2,5-diphenyloxazolyl), 1-naphthyl-methyl, 2-naphthyl, and 4-[5-(2-phenyloxazolyl)]phenyl. S is a surfactant moiety which makes the molecule hydrophilic, e.g., dehydro derivatives of surfactants; preferred examples include polyethylene glycol derivatives, sulfonic acids or salts thereof, aryl sulfonates, amines and quaternary ammonium compounds. B is a binding moiety which chemically binds the fluor moiety F with the surfactant S, and may be a chemical bond, or a disubstituted moiety such as an alkylene, e.g., methylene group. The variables x, y and z are integers which can generally vary from 1 to 10. A number of such compounds are disclosed, as well as methods of using such compounds, as well as compositions and products for fluorographic analysis in connection with chromatography, electrophoresis etc.

    There is provided a process for producing a styrenic graft copolymer which comprises coplymerizing a styrenic monomer and a styrenic monomer having a hydrocarbon radical with an unsaturated bond in the presence of a catalyst comprising as primary ingredient (A) a transition metal compound and (B) a contact product of an organoaluminum compound and a condensation agent or (C) a compound which produces an ionic complex by reacting with the above-mentioned transition metal compound and subsequently graft polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer onto the resultant styrenic copolymer. The above-described styrenic graft copolymer is greatly improved in terms of compatibility, adhesivity, coatability and wettability while preserving heat resistance and chemical resistance thereof, and thus effective as a variety of constructional materials and compatibilizing agents. Furthermore, the composition or multi-layer material comprising the above-mentioned styrenic graft copolymer is widely utilized in a variety of application field including film, sheet, especially stampable sheet, container, packaging material, automobile parts, electrical and electronic parts, etc.

A black curable composition includes titanium black, an alkali-soluble resin having a weight average molecular weight of from 2000 to less than 20,000 or a weight average molecular weight of 20,000 to 100,000, a solvent, a photopolymerization initiator, and a compound having an ethylenic unsaturated double bond. A light-shielding color filter having a colored region is formed using the polymerizable composition or the black curable composition. A solid-state image pickup device has the light-shielding color filter.
