    This invention relates to drilling fluid additives that suppress clay swelling within a subterranean well and to methods for controlling clay swelling during the drilling of a subterranean well. In one embodiment trihydroxy alkyl amine is reacted with an alkyl halide or a water soluble quaternary amine to form a quaternized trihydroxy alkyl amine. The reaction products can also include condensed reaction products of quaternized trihydroxy alkyl amines. In another embodiment a choline derivative is used. The quaternized reaction products and choline derivatives are characterized by low toxicity and compatibility with anionic drilling fluid components. The products are added to water base drilling fluids which are circulated throughout a well. The drilling fluid additives and the method of controlling clay swelling provide for improved control of the rheological properties of drilling fluids along with increased environmental and drilling fluid compatibility.

    A composite used to slowly release well treatment agents and/or tracers into a well contains a calcined substrate comprising a metal oxide coated onto at least a portion of a core and a well treatment agent adsorbed onto or absorbed into the interstitial spaces of the metal oxide coating of the calcined substrate. The core contains a material sufficient in strength to prevent closure of a fracture created or enlarged within a subterranean formation penetrated by the well at in-situ reservoir conditions.

    Compositions containing a mixture of microcapsules and a bulk polymer, where the microcapsules have an oil field chemical contained within the microcapsules are provided. The microcapsules can be present in a variety of configurations. The microcapsules contain a core or a micro-matrix containing the oil field chemicals. The core or micro-matrix can be surrounded by one or more polymeric shells, where each shell contains at least one polymer that affects the release of the oil field chemical from the composition. The compositions provide for the sustained release of an oil field chemical into fluid in an oil field reservoir over long periods of time. Methods of making the compositions and articles containing the compositions are also provided. Further provided are methods of tracing the movement of fluid in a hydrocarbon reservoir using the compositions, and methods of providing for the sustained release of oil field chemicals.

    A method of gravel packing a wellbore can include mixing an activator, a thickener, a crosslinker and a plurality of resin-coated proppant particulates to provide a gravel pack fluid and introducing the gravel pack fluid into a gravel pack region of the wellbore. At least a portion of the plurality of resin-coated proppant particulates can be consolidated in the gravel pack region of the wellbore to provide a consolidated gravel pack. The consolidated gravel pack can have a UCS of at least about 60 psi when formed under a pressure of about 0.01 psi to about 50 psi and a temperature of about 160° F. to about 250° F.

    A method of treating a multi-zoned subterranean formation with composites having well treatment agents is disclosed. The well treatment agent treated in each zone is distinguishable. At least a portion of the well treatment agent is released from one of the composites into the well or formation. The formation of undesirable contaminants may be inhibited or prevented in the well or in the formation by the release of the well treatment agent from one or more of the composites. The well treatment agent also serves as a tracer. When fluid transported from the formation or well is collected, the source of the transported fluid may be determined by comparing a chemical or physical parameter of the well treatment agent with a working set of known taggants.
