    A multizone test device for the determination of analyte in a liquid test medium. The test device preferably comprises multilayers including a first layer comprising a solid, porous matrix incorporated with a reversibly immobilized first reagent and a second layer comprising a solid, porous matrix incorporated with a second reagent which interacts with the first reagent and analyte from the liquid test medium to provide a detectable signal. A reversible binding interaction between the first reagent and the matrix of the first layer prevents the first reagent from prematurely migrating into the second layer during manufacture of the device and prior to application of the liquid test medium to the test device. The reversible binding interaction is sufficiently disruptable by contact of the first layer with the liquid test medium to release and thereby render diffusible an analytically effective amount of the first reagent within the test device.

    An IgG dipstick or other device is disclosed for the colourimetric detection of IgG in a sample in the presence of other proteins. The dipstick or other device comprises a porous ion exchange member 1, e.g. of ion exchange filter paper, into which the IgG containing sample is drawn by capillary attraction. The pH of the sample is adjusted to the isoelectric point of IgG, and due to the faster diffusion rate of IgG at its isoelectric point as compared with other proteins in the sample which have different isoelectric points, IgG is preferentially separated from the other proteins and its presence is detected by a band of protein reactive dye 2 incorporated into the porous ion exchange member at a predetermined distance from the point of application of the protein sample.

    The present invention provides a method and device that substantially increases reverse iontophoretic flux and therefore, noninvasive extraction of uncharged and charged permeant molecules alike through the skin. By substituting the mobile co-ions, which are capable of easily entering the pores from the receiver compartment of a reverse iontophoretic extraction device with large conductive polyelectrolytes within the reservoir that do not appreciably enter the pores, the invention significantly improves the amount of analyte extracted, improves device performance, decreases energy requirements, increases battery life, reduces the potential for irritation, and improves accuracy, reproducibility, and precision.

    An iontophoretic method for transporting compounds of interest across a body tissue is provided. The method can be used to extract analytes or deliver drugs. The method utilizes a polyelectrolyte and provides for the maintenance of a substantially constant flux across a localized region of the tissue through which transport occurs, thereby allowing a compound of interest to be transported across the tissue in a controlled and predictable manner. In addition, the presence of the polyclectrolyte reduces the lag-time of molecular transport through the body tissue.
