  A zinc borate having a particular crystallite size and containing very little sodium components and a method of preparing the same. The zinc borate has a particular chemical composition, has a crystallite size of not smaller than 40 nm as found from diffraction peaks of indexes of planes of (020), (101) and (200) in the X-ray diffraction image (Cu-k&agr;) and contains sodium components in amounts of not larger than 100 ppm as measured by the atomic absorptiometric method.

  Chlorinated organic compounds having their resistance to deterioration (when heated, exposed to light or water, or in contact with certain metals such as iron and aluminum) enhanced by a 1,3-dicarbonyl compound having the formula: wherein: R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydrocarbon groups having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms and such groups substituted with one or more groups selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy OR,, ester COORI, alkyl and alkoxycarbonyl alkyl having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms; R2 is defined as R1 except that it cannot be hydrogen; R, is defined as R, and can additionallv stand for as well as metal and organotin enolate salts thereof. The compounds are effective in enhancing the resistance to deterioration of chlorinated hydrocarbons and chlorinated higher fatty acid esters.

  Stabilizer compositions for halogen-containing polymers are provided composed of a β-diketone having the formula: wherein: R1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydrocarbon groups having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms and such groups substituted with one or more groups selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy OR1, ester COOR,, alkyl and alkoxycarbonyl alkyl having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms, and R2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen; hydroxyl; hydrocarbon having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms and such hydrocarbon groups substituted with one or more groups selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy OR,, ester COOR1, alkyl and alkoxycarbonyl having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms; and if Z is R2 or n is 1 to 3, then no more than one R2 is hydrogen; one R1 and one R2 or two R2 may be linked together as an alkylene group to form a cyclic or ring structure; n is a number from 0 to 3; and Z is selected from the group consisting of R2 and a polyvalent linking radical selected from the group consisting of a direct linkage between the polyvalent hydrocarbon R3; wherein: R3 is a polyvalent hydrocarbon group having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms; R4 and R5 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and hydrocarbon groups having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms; and R4 and R5 may be linked together as an alkylene to form a cyclic or ring structure; X is -0- or -S-; m is 0 or 1; and R6 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydrocarbon having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms, and -R3-; as well as metal and organotin enolate salts thereof; and a hydrotalcite having the general formula: wherein x is a number from 0 to 0.5; A is CO3= or S04=, and m is a number representing the number of H20 in the molecule. The stabilizer compositions are effective in enhancing the resistance to deterioration by heat and light of halogen-containing polymers and especially polyvinyl halide resins. The β-diketone and hydrotalcite in these compositions exhibit a synergistic stabilizing effectiveness superior to either alone in like amount.

  Magnesium oxide is incorporated into a polyvinyl chloride resin composition comprising a polyvinyl chloride, a hydrotalcite, a β-diketone compound and an organic acid salt of zinc or a polyvinyl chloride resin composition comprising a polyvinyl chloride, a hydro­talcite and an organic tin compound. Bubbling as well as discoloration can be prevented in a molded article prepared from the polyvinyl chloride resin composition. Magnesium oxide having a specific surface area of at least 50 m²/g and an average secondary particle size smaller than 5 µm is preferably used.
