An efficient and versatile synthesis of indane, tetralin and benzosuberan derivatives has been developed; the synthesis starts from nonactivated aromatic compounds bearing unsaturated side chains and is a bismuth(III) or indium(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate-catalysed atom-economic process.
