Reaction of Zn(OSP(OR)2)2 with PtCl2 (PMe3)2 gives the title compound which consists of a central octahedral zinc facially coordinated by two [(Me3P)PtCl(SOP(OiPr)2)2]- ligands; the bridging chlorides being cis.

The single stage preparation of M[O(S)P(OPri)2]n(n= 2, M = Zn 1, Co 2 or Cd 3; n= 1, M = NH4+4) from HPO(OPri)2, sulfur and ZnO, CoCO3, CdCO3 or NH3 has been achieved. Zn[S2P(OR)2]2 reacts with [PtCl2(PMe2Ph)2] to give [PtS2P(OR)2(PMe2Ph)2]+ whereas Zn[OSP(OR)2]2(2) forms [(Me2PhP)2PtOSP(OR)2}2ZnCl2], (4) a hetero-bimetallic complex combining hard and soft metals co-ordinated by oxygen and sulphur respectively; both new compounds have been characterised by X-ray crystallography.
