2-diphenylethanone with sodium in ether and subsequent addition of carbon disulfide or ethylchloroformateresulted in the formation of 3,4,5-trisubstituted 4-oxazoline-2-thiones and 2-ones, respectively. 1,4-Oxazonines and 1,4-oxazocines were also synthesised from the reaction of 2-imino-1,2-diphenylethanone with sodium in THF followed by addition of dihaloalkanes.

in the presence of equimolecular amounts of N-arylcarbonimidoyl dichlorides, provides a new and very convenient method for the synthesis of 3,4,5-triaryl-2-aryliminooxazolines. Geometrical characteristics of this little known class of heterocycle were determined by X-ray crystallography of 2-(4-chlorophenylimino)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(4-methylphe-nyl)-4-phenyloxazoline.
