    The invention provides a method of carrying out a Lewis-acid catalysed organic reaction in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst comprising a metal-organic compound having the following formula: M(HO(CR 1 R 2 )z)a(O(CR 1 R 2 )z)bY—(CR 3 R 4 )χ-Y((CR 1 R 2 )zO)c((CR 1 R 2 )zOH)d.nR 5 OH (Formula I) in which: M is a metal atom, preferably titanium, zirconium, hafnium or iron (III) Y is selected from P and N, but Ss very preferably N; each R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 is independently selected from H, alkyl, aryl, substituted alkyl or substituted aryl, R 5 is hydrogen, an alkyl group, a hydroxy-functionalised alkyl group, a polyoxyalkylmoiety, R 6 O or R 7 COO where R 6 and R 7 may each represent H, alkyl, aryl or alkyl-aryl; d and a are each O or 1, b and c are each 1 or 2, b+c=the valency of M, a+b+c+d=4, each z is independently 1, 2, 3 or 4; x represents the least number of C atoms between the Y atoms and is 2 or 3 and n is a number in the range from 0 to 4. The metal-organic compound forms a stable hydrate in water which retains Lewis-acid catalytic properties.

    The present invention provides an aqueous ink composition comprising: (a) at least one N,N,N',N'-tetrakis-(2-hydroxyalkyl)-ethylenediamine represented by the formula wherein Ri, R2, R3 and R4 each represent a group of the formula and mav be the same, or at least one of these groups may be different from the others, n being zero or an integer of 1 to 3, (b) a dye, (c) a hygroscopic water-soluble organic solvent, and (d) water. The aqueous ink composition of the invention is used for fountain pens, porous point pens, roller pens or like writing implements, and has an improved storage stability, continuous writability and solution stability.

    Quadrol and homologs and analogs thereof have been found to stimulate macrophage activity in warm blooded animals. As a consequence, these compounds may be used to combat bacterial infection, remove degenerated tissue, and promote new tissue growth. Quadrol or a homolog or analog thereof may be applied topically, e.g., as the active agent in a wound dressing. The active compounds may be represented by the formula (I) wherein R₁ and R₂ are substituted alkyl (C₂-­C₆) in which the substituents include one or more hydroxyl groups attached to carbon atoms other than the alpha carbon atom, R₃ and R₄ are alkyl or substituted alkyl (C₁-C₆), and n=2 to about 6. Preferably R₁ through R₄ are the same and are 2-hydroxyalkyl.

    There is provided an oligomeric polyol composition having (a) an oligomeric network containing residues of at least one polyhydroxylated aromatic compound and residues of at least one polyol having at least three hydroxyl groups; and (b) a plurality of peripheral groups having one or more pendant hydroxyl groups bound to the oligomeric network by a plurality of linking units. The residues of the polyol may optionally contain one or more oxygen ether groups, one or more amino ether groups, or both of one or more oxygen ether groups and one or more amino ether groups. Reaction of the oligomeric polyols with isocyanate monomers affords a new class of polyurethanes having superior heat and water resistance. The new polyurethanes exhibit lower peak exotherms, typically less than 250° F. during in-mold polymerization. Articles prepared from polyurethanes incorporating such oligomeric polyol compositions exhibit flexural strengths and moduli in excess of 10,000 psi and 400,000 psi respectively, and outstanding green strength.
