Synthesis of 2,3‐Diarylindanones and 2‐Arylindenes from Trisubstituted α,β‐Unsaturated Esters Derived from Highly Strained 2,3‐Diarylcyclopropenones and Coumarin Derivatives

A mild and efficient synthetic protocol to access two biologically important scaffolds, 2,3-diarylindanones and 2-arylindenes, is described. The modular approach involves ring-opening of highly strained 2,3-diarylcyclopropenones with coumarins to form α,β-unsaturated esters and enables the formation of two different series of indane scaffolds by merely changing the reaction conditions.
