    A novel acetylenic amine and an aqueous composition containing said amine for inhibiting the corrosion of metals is described. The composition comprises a non-oxidizing acid, and, as a corrosion inhibitor, an effective amount of tertiary amine containing acetylenic unsaturation having the formula: wherein R1 and R2 are independently C1-C8 alkyl or phenyl and R3 is selected from the group of branched chain C7-C10 alkyl, cinnamyl optionally mono- or di-substituted with halo, C1-C8 alkyl and/or C1-C8 alkoxy; mono- or di-similarly substituted phenyl or, when R1 and R2 are other than C1-C2 alkyl, then R3 can be unsubstituted phenyl.

    The design and synthesis of a novel piperidine series of farnesyltransferase (FTase) inhibitors with reduced potential for metabolic glucuronidation are described. The various substitution and exchange of the phenyl group at the C-2 position of the previously described 2-(4-hydroxy)phenyl-3-nitropiperidine 1a (FTase IC50 = 5.4 nM) resulted in metabolically stable compounds with potent FTase inhibition (14a IC50 = 4.3 nM, 20a IC50 = 3.0 nM, and 50a IC50 = 16 nM).     When treated with Ac(2)O at rt in the presence of 4-6 mol% FeCl(3), 2-alkylcinnamaldehydes are converted to 2-alkyl-1H-inden-1-yl acetates through the intermediacy of gemdiacetates. Methanolysis of the indenyl acetates yields the corresponding indenols, Saponification yields 2-alkylindanones, providing, in effect, an intramolecular acylation employing catalytic levels of acid.
