    Oil-soluble viscosity index-improving ethylene copolymers, such as copolymers of ethylene and propylene; and ethylene, propylene and diolefin; etc., are reacted or grafted with ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid moieties, preferably maleic anhydride, and reacted with polyamines having two or more primary amine groups and a carboxylic acid component, preferably alkylene polyamine and alkenyl succinic anhydride, such as polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride; or the grafted ethylene copolymer can be reacted with already formed salts, amides, imides, etc. of said polyamine and acid component, preferably imides of alkylene polyamine and alkenyl succinic anhydride. These reactions can permit the incorporation of varnish inhibition and dispersancy into the ethylene copolymer while inhibiting cross-linking with resulting viscosity increase, haze or gelling.

    Oil-soluble viscosity index-improving ethylene copolymers, such as copolymers of ethylene and propylene; and ethylene, propylene and diolefin; etc., are maleic anhydride, and the maleic anhydride is maintained below its solubility limit during grafting. The grafted product may be reacted with polyamines having two or more primary amine groups and a carboxylic acid component, preferably alkylene polyamine and alkenyl succinic anhydride, such as polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride; or the grafted ethylene copolymer can be reacted with already formed salts, amides, imides, etc. of said polyamine and acid component, preferably imides of alkylene polyamine and alkenyl succinic anhydride. The grafting reaction gives products with improved haze performance.

    Oil-soluble, derivatized ethylene copolymers derived from about 15 to 90 wt. % ethylene, and one or more C₃ to C₂₈ alpha-olefins, e.g. propylene, which are grafted, preferably solution-grafted under an inert atmosphere and at elevated temperatures and in the presence of a high-temperature decomposable free-radical initiator, with an ethylenically-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid material and thereafter reacted with a polyamine having at least two primary amine groups, e.g. an alkylene polyamine such as diethylene triamine, to form carboxyl-grafted polymeric imide, usually maleimide, derivatives are subsequently reacted with a C₁₂ to about C₁₈ hydrocarbyl substituted dicarboxylic acid anhydride, preferably a C₁₂ to about C₁₈ hydrocarbyl substituted succinic anhydride, to yield an oil-soluble stable imide of said carboxyl-grafted copolymeric imide whereby oil solutions thereof are characterized by minimal viscosity change over an extended period of time. Useful number average molecular weights (Mn) of said copolymers range from about 700 to 500,000; however, if the molecular weight is from about 10,000 to 500,000 then these copolymers are also useful as multi-functional viscosity index improvers.

    Oleaginous compositions, particularly lubricating oil compositions, exhibiting improved low temperature viscometric properties containing a viscosity index improving effective amount of a multifunctional viscosity index improver comprised of the reaction products of: (a) an oil soluble ethylene copolymer comprising from about 15 to 90 wt. % ethylene and from about 10 to 85 wt. % of at least one C₃ to C₂₈ alpha-olefin, having a number average molecular weight of from about 5,000 to 500,000, grafted with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid material having 1 or 2 acid or anhydride moieties; (b) an organic polyamine having at least two reactive amine groups selected from primary and secondary amine groups, or a polyol; and (c) poly-n-butene substituted dicarboxylic acid material, wherein said poly-n-butene has a number average molecular weight of from about 300 to about 3,000.

    Oil soluble composition of matter useful as a multifunctional viscosity index modifier for oleaginous impositions comprising reaction product of: (i) (a) copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin moomer, said copolymer comprising intramolecularly heterogeneous copolymer chains containing at least one crystallizable segment of methylene units and at least one low crystallinity ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer segment, wherein said at least one crystallizable segment comprises at least about 10 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains at least about 57 weight percent ethylene, wherein said low crystallinity segment contains not greater than about 53 weight percent ethylene, and wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight distribution characterized by at least one of a ratio of Mw/Mn of less than 2 and a ratio of MzMw of less than 1.8. and wherein at least two portions of an individual intramolecularly heterogeneous chain, each portion comprising at least 5 weight percent of said chain, differ in composition from one another by at least 7 weight percent ethylene, grafted with (b) ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid material having 1 to 2 carboxylic acid groups or anhydride group; and (ii) at least one of (a) polyamine having at least two reactive amino groups selected from primary amino groups. secondary amino groups, and mixtures thereof, (b) polyol, (c) polyol, and about Csc to about C400 hydrocarbyl substituted carboxylic acid component containing 1 to 2 carboxylic acid groups or anhydride group, and (d) polyamine having at least two reactive amino groups selected from primary amino groups,secondary amino groups. and mixtures thereof, and about C50 to about C4oc hydrocarbyl substituted carboxylic acid component containing 1 to 2 carboxylic acid groups or anhydride group.
