Conformations and configurations were assigned to several N-Me imines and N-alkyl acetaldimines from analyses of their 60-Mc NMR spectra. All aldimines exist exclusively in the syn configuration. Interpretation of the vicinal and long-range (across 4 and 5 and bonds) spin-spin coupling constants of N-Me aldimines led to the conclusion that I and II are the minimum energy conformations of these compounds

Tris(pentafluorophenyl)silylamines were synthesized by silylation of amines and imines with (C6F5)3SiCl or (C6F5)3SiOTf in the presence of triethylamine. The crystal structures of the (C6F5)3SiN(H)CH2Ph and (C6F5)3SiN(CH=CMe2)CH2Ph compounds were studied by X-ray diffraction. The crystal packings were analyzed by quantum chemical calculations in terms of the density functional theory (PBE exchange-correlation functional).

A new approach for the synthesis of N-(pentafluorophenylmethyl)aminoethanols is developed. The method includes alkylation of imines with 2-tris(pentafluorophenyl)silyloxyethyl triflate, prepared from ethylene oxide and (C6F5)3SiOTf, to give 2-silyloxyethyliminium ions. Their treatment with sodium acetate induces C-C bond formation proceeding as transfer of the C6F5 group from the five-coordinate silicate intermediate to the iminium center.
