A process for preparing (o-hydroxyaryl)-methanols by reacting a phenol-derivative with a compound of formula R(OCO)m COY (where R is hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, heterocyclic; m is 0 or 1; and Y is COR, CR(OB)2, COOR or CN, where R has the above mentioned meaning and B is alkyl, arylalkyl or both B radicals are an alkylidene radical which together with the group -0-C-O-to which it is bound, is forming an alicyclic system) in the presence of a Lewis acid.
The compounds thus obtained are new excepting when m is 0, R is H, Y is COOH and the starting phenol derivative is 4-chloro-, 2-methoxy, 2-methyl, 2,4-dibromo-, 2,4-dimethyl-, 3,4-dimethyl- or 3,6-dimethyl-phenol.
Preferred Lewis acids are the derivates of metals having a high valence degree.
