    Disclosed is an ink composition which comprises an aqueous liquid vehicle and particles of an average diameter of 100 nanometers or less which comprise micelles of block copolymers of the formula ABA, wherein A represents a hydrophilic segment and B represents a hydrophobic segment, and wherein dye molecules are covalently attached to the micelles, the dye molecules being detectable when exposed to radiation outside the visible wavelength range. Optionally, silica is precipitated within the micelles. In a specific embodiment, the dye molecules are substantially colorless. In another specific embodiment, the ink also contains a visible colorant.

    An ink composition which comprises an aqueous liquid vehicle, a colorant, and a polymeric additive of the formula wherein R1 and R2 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl groups with from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, and alkoxy groups with from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, R3 and R4 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups with from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, and x and y are each independently a number of from about 100 to about 400, present in an amount of at least about 1 part per million. The ink is suitable for use in ink jet printing processes, particularly thermal ink jet printing processes.

    The invention provides submicron particles. The invention further provides submicron particles which are dispersed in an aqueous colloid. The invention further provides a method of forming the stable dispersion which includes providing an ion exchange resin, loading the ion exchange resin with an ion, treating the loaded resin to form nanoscale particles. The invention further provides fluidizing the resin and particles to form an aqueous stable colloid. The invention further provides low optical density magnetic fluid which is a stable dispersion of fine magnetic particles. The invention further provides a method of forming the stable dispersion which includes providing an ion exchange resin, loading the ion exchange resin with an ion capable of forming a magnetic phase, treating the loaded resin to form magnetic particles and micronizing the resin and magnetic particles in a fluid to form an aqueous stable colloid.

    Disclosed is a process for preparing an ink composition which comprises (a) forming a mixture by admixing water and a base; (b) adding a colorant to the mixture; and (c) adjusting the pH of the mixture by adding polyphosphoric acid thereto. Also disclosed is a process for preparing an ink composition which comprises (a) forming a mixture by admixing water and polyphosphoric acid; (b) adding a colorant to the mixture; and (c) adjusting the pH of the mixture by adding a base thereto. Further disclosed are ink compositions prepared by these processes. Additionally disclosed are processes which comprises incorporating these inks into an ink jet printing apparatus and causing droplets of the ink to be ejected in an imagewise pattern onto a substrate. The presence of polyphosphoric acid and the base create a buffer system in the ink which adjusts the ink to the desired pH, and also enables improved latency and waterfastness.

    A method of forming polymeric microspheres for biomedical applications includes forming polymeric microspheres by an emulsion/aggregation process from a precursor monomer species, and treating the polymeric microspheres to attach a biomedical functional material to the polymeric microspheres, where the polymeric microspheres have an average particle diameter of from about 1 to about 15 microns with a narrow particle geometric size distribution. The biomedical functional material may be, for example, a radioactive material, a radioactive precursor material, a bioactive agent, or a ligand.
