A series of aryl-1,2,3-selenadiazoles has been prepared, and their n.m.r. spectral parameters are recorded. The ranges of chemical shifts of the 5-proton due to meta- or para-substitution in the 4-aryl substituent are similar to those for the corresponding protons in the side-chains of substituted benzenes.

Abstract Under the action of potassiumhydroxide, 4-(2-naphthyl)-1,2,3-selenadiazole readily decomposes with the evolution of nitrogen and the formation of potassium2-(2-naphthyl)ethynylselenolate. Further treatment of the reaction mixture with an excess of secondary amines led to the formation of the corresponding dialkylamides of 2-naphthylselenoacetic acids in 64–92% yield.
