    The invention relates to a method for preparing a hard film or coating from a composition based on monomers, oligomers and/or polymers capable of being involved in cationic polymerization and/or crosslinking reactions, comprising reactive functional radicals capable of forming intra-chain and inter-chain bridges, so as to obtain a polymerized and/or crosslinked film, coating or bulk (for example composite) material which has a certain level of hardness and a certain level of mechanical strength. The initiator system for polymerization and/or crosslinking, formed by an iodonium borate photoinitiator and by a photosensitizer chosen from di-anthracene-ethers, di-naphthalene-ethers and/or di-benzene-ethers, makes it possible to use a smaller amount of iodonium borate compared with the known systems, for an equivalent efficiency and with an acceptable odour being given off, in particular after polymerization/crosslinking.

    The present invention addresses the problem of providing an optical compensation thin film which contains a cellulose acylate and an additive and which when laminated on a polarizer with a photocurable adhesive, exhibits high adhesiveness to the polarizer and can reduce the occurrence of curling and the deterioration of polarization degree. An optical compensation film which contains a cellulose acylate having an acylation degree of 2.0 to 2.5 and an additive and which has a film thickness of 15 to 40 μm, characterized in that when 50 pl of hydroxyethyl acrylate droplets are dropped on the film at 23 C and 55% RH, at least one surface of the film exhibits a permeability of 10 to 25 pl/15 sec to the droplets.

    To provide a retardation film that, while maintaining a high retardation value, has increased durability such as moist heat resistance and can prevent the occurrence of color unevenness even if made in a size having a large area. The retardation film contains a cellulose ester as the primary component, has a film thickness of 15 μm or more and less than 40 μm, has a film thickness variation both in the widthwise direction and lengthwise direction of 0 to 4 μm, and satisfies an Rt humidity fluctuation represented by the formula (1) described below of 1% to 12%. Formula (1): Rt humidity fluctuation=(ΔRt value, a difference of retardation Rt(590) values in the thickness direction represented by the following formula (ii) measured at a wavelength of 590 nm after the film has been left to stand for 5 hours in each of a 23° C., 20% relative humidity environment and a 23° C., 80% relative humidity environment)/(Rt(590) value measured after the film has been left to stand for 5 hours in a 23° C., 55% relative humidity environment)×100. Formula (ii): Rt(590)=(n x +n y )/ 2 −n z }×d (wherein n x represents a refractive index in the slow axis direction in the film plane, n y represents a refractive index in the direction perpendicular to the slow axis in the film plane, n z represents a refractive index in the thickness direction of the film, and d represents a film thickness (nm), respectively).

    A polarizing plate, wherein a λ/4 film and a cured layer which includes a UV-curable resin are layered in this order on one side of a polarizer via an adhesive layer. The thickness of the λ/4 film is 10 μm to 70 μm. The adhesive layer bonds the polarizer and the λ/4 film by a state change from a liquid state. The cured layer includes an organic compound having a UV-absorbing function.
