A 2-(phosphirenyl)ethylphosphinidene [W(CO)5]2 complex undergoes an original phosphinidene + phosphirene self-condensation to yield the tricyclic compound 5 with an unusual 2,4-diphosphabicyclobutane “butterfly” structure. The product has been characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis and its formation studied from a theoretical standpoint at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level.
