Fe(NO3)3 mediated radicalreactions of silyloxycyclopropanes derived from a range of bicyclic ketones are described, and include examples that undergo an unexpected regiochemical mode of cyclopropane cleavage. The inclusion of CH2I2 in such reactions allows the synthesis of iodinated products.

A variety of cyclopropanone acetal derivatives were found to undergo facile Fe(III) mediated oxidative radical cyclisation to the corresponding trisubstituted cyclopentane esters in good yield and with diastereoselectivities as high as 23:1.

Treatment of the cyclopropanone acetals 7 or 11 with three different FeIII species gives the lactone 9 and the ester 13 respectively via an oxidative cyclopropane cleavage followed by a 5-exo radical cyclisation–abstraction sequence.
