    Biaryl Construction via Ni-Catalyzed C−O Activation of Phenolic Carboxylates

    Biaryl scaffolds were constructed via Ni-catalyzed aryl C-O activation by avoiding cleavage of the more reactive acyl C-O bond aryl carboxylates. Now aryl esters, in general, can be successfully employed in cross-coupling reactions for the first time. The substrate scope and synthetic utility of the chemistry were demonstrated by the syntheses of more than 40 biaryls and by constructing complex organic molecules. Water was observed to play an important role in facilitating this transformation.

    An object of the present invention is to provide a method for directly performing arylation (particularly α-arylation) of carbonyl or thiocarbonyl compounds using a more inexpensive phenol derivative and nickel catalyst. Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel nickel catalyst that can be used in this method, and a novel ligand of the nickel catalyst. The novel compounds of the present invention are a compound having a diphosphine skeleton in which a five- or six-membered heterocyclic ring is substituted with two dialkylphosphines and/or dicycloalkylphosphines, or a salt thereof, and a compound having the diphosphine skeleton that is bound to nickel. Moreover, coupling reaction of a carbonyl compound and a phenol derivative can be advanced in the presence of a nickel compound having a monodentate or bidentate dialkylphosphine and/or dicycloalkylphosphine skeleton.

    Poly(aryl ether/thioether)-polyester block copolymers are prepared by reacting a polyester with a poly(aryl ether/thioether) having at least one electron-withdrawing group located in a position ortho or para to its ether/thioether linking group, in the presence of an exchange catalyst. The copolymers of the present application exhibit high temperature stability and excellent thermoplastic engineering properties, as well as superior solvent resistance, making them particularly suited for producing molded plastic components for the automotive and eletrical housings markets.

    An aromatic polyester of good processability and heat resistance is prepared by charging starting materials in a reaction vessel, carrying out polycondensation reaction in the vessel until the flow temperature of the produced aromatic polyester falls in the temperature range of from 240°C to a temperature of 20°C below the reaction temperature and discharging the reaction product from the vessel in the molten state. The aromatic polyester obtained by the present invention can be used molded into various forms such as fiber, film, etc. In addition, compositions comprising this aromatic polyester and glass fibers, mica, talc, silica, potassium titanate, wollastonite, calcium carbonate, quartz, iron oxide, graphite, carbon fibers, etc. can be used in machine parts, electric and electronic parts and automobile parts because of their excellent mechanical properties, electric properties, chemical resistance and oil resistance.
