  A method of preventing the growth of fungi and bacteria including Gram-negative bacteria in water-containing compositions characterised by the addition to the composition, as an agent for the control of Gram-negative bacteria, of one or more compounds of the general formula: where X represents CHO or a mannic base, represented by where R, and R2 each represent an alkyl group (preferably containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms), or, together with an oxygen atom form the residue of an N-morpholinyl ring, A represents fluorine, bromine, chlorine, iodine, an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a hydroxyl group, a nitro group, a primary amino group or hydrogen; B represents fluorine, bromine, chlorine, iodine, an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a hydroxy group, a nitro group, a primary amino group or hydrogen provided that where X is a mannic base only one of A and B may represent hydrogen.
