  1,8-naphthyridine compounds of the following formula wherein X is a halogen atom especially fluorine or chlorine, R is an ethyl or vinyl group and R2 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, as well as hydrates and nontoxic pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. Said compounds have high antibacterial activities against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and low toxicity and can be used as antibacterial agents.
