A process for preparing an aqueous polyamide dispersion, said process comprising reacting in an aqueous medium: a) an organic diamine compound (A) and b) an organic dicarboxylic acid compound (B), in the presence of c) at least one hydrolase enzyme (C) which catalyzes a polycondensation reaction of the diamine compound (A) and dicarboxylic acid compound (B) and d) an emulsifier (D), said process being characterized in that at least a fraction of the diamine compound (A) and the dicarboxylic acid compound (B) are provided in the aqueous medium as a disperse phase having an average droplet diameter of from 40 to 500nm.
